Default Temp gauge query

Hi folks,

My car's had numberous issues since I've taken ownership last year and was hoping that somebody can point me in the right direction, please?

Driving to work on the motorway and the temp gauge was on 85 / 90. Next time I looked it had dropped straight down. I'd down about 12 miles and when I got to work, I popped the bonnet and trust me it's hot enough.

Is this just a sensor that has proberly gone?

many thanks in advance
