Default my front wheel keeps making a knocking sound

my 97 A4 front right wheel makes a knocking sound everytime i hit a bump or pot hole, i was told it was the ball joint so i had both lower and upper replaced and it still won't stop. Someone else suggested that it was the shocks being loose somewhere, no one has been able to give me a 100% diagnosis on the matter. Has anyone ever had a similar problem?? any suggestions or possible solutions???

Default

Since you replaced the ball joints in the control arms I would give the following a once over:
- I would check the sway bar mounts and links
- Strut mounts upper and lower and the struts themselves
- tie rods inner & outer
- Brake calibers might be another

I am betting on the sway bar links but it could be a tie rod end too.

Default Knocking sound

I had the same problem. Replaced the control arms, uppers and lowers as well as the ball joints. Torned out to be a cracked CV joint. Had that replaced and now it is finally quiet.
