Default Grinding - possibly CV Joint?

Firstly hello to everyone! Going to be a typical newbie and come straight in with a problem

On my Audi A4 1.8 I have had a grinding noise when turning right for a while now. Now it happens if turning left too.

I know the CV (constant velocity) Joint Gaitor has deteriorated but surely this alone couldn't cause the noise. Is it something I can't see?

The car has done 128k and had reletively no problems until now. German certainly know how to build cars!

Hello Ryan and welcome.Skyline ummm very quick, anyway if the cv boot is split the bets are the joint will be dry and knocking/clicking noise. Also consider the power steering at this mileage the racks leak inside the boots and a gratting noise will be noticed as well as discolouring af the fluid in the resivior. If the rack has gone then the pump will also be worn from contaminated fluid.Start with the cv joint.regards Jon

Hi Jon

Thanks for the heads up on the power steering. I will be paying close attention to this and will check it when I get a spare five minutes. Definately not something you want going wrong.

Me being me I kept hunting last night and came up with what it might be. I strongly suspect it is the wheel bearing. Going by what Wikipedia says.

Wheel bearing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I think the CV joint will need replacing too though as the gaiter is on its last legs and that will leed to further problems

Just a quick update for future reference for anyone.

The grinding noise did in fact turn out to be both the front wheel bearings. One had seised. But after the new bearings the car is running perfectly once more
