Buying an A4 1.9TD SE- what to look for...

I'm looking to buy an B5 A4 1.9TD SE, most likely in a private sale. I've not yet decided on the saloon vs avant. The car will be high-ish mileage, is a full service history an essential?

What are the know issues/problem areas with this model, what questions should I be asking the seller? What recalls have there been for this model?

I don't have a particular car in mind yet, but I'm wanting to arm myself with as much background before I start visiting sellers.

I myself as owning 3 audi's have always said it is really important when buying a Audi to have FULL service history, Only because of the importance of belt repacemenet's and service. If there is sludge in the motor it can cause all sort's of problem's.
The only thing is I noticed it's a 1.9 TD Se and I am not to knowledgable with that engine.
I will check with a friend and get back to you ASAP.
