Just had my 1998 a4 quattro 1.8 in for service today at the dealer. 60k miles. Did you know that there is a recall related to the timing belt? They will inspect the belt and if it looks good, they will stamp the record and if it snaps before 90k miles, they'll pay for the damage.
Unfortunately, mine was glazed and had a old style tensioner so they recommended that I replace it at my own expense. They estimate 7 hours of work and approx 650 in cost. That's without the water pump replacement. I will probably not do the water pump since there are only 60k miles on it. I hope this helps you. You may want to look into the recall before you replace your belt.
