My check engine light is on. I do not see or feel anything wrong with the car. How can I check what the status code is short of paying over $100 to the dealer to tell me what it is.

Is there a computer I can buy for my car to do it?

sure, you'll need a VAG-COM diagnostic tool.. i've got mine from ross-tech.

Ross Tech Diagnostic Software for European Automobiles

try them out, there are many things you can do with the hookup other than just pull codes. they're not inexpensive tho, and knockoffs you find on ebay are both crappy and dangerous for your car.
