My check engine light on my 2001 Audi A4 came on a couple days ago. What does this mean?? Is it safe to drive long distances??

could be any number of things, you can't know what tripped it until you have it looked at by a dealer or someone else who can use a VAG-COM diagnostic tool to pull the fault code.

flashing check engine light = drive to the dealer or have it towed there right away

steady on CEL = okay to drive but get it checked out soon to be safe.

Thanks for the response. Do you think I can take it to a gas service station, or does it have to be the dealership? The dealership is booked until the end of next week but I'd like to have it looked at sooner if possible. Thanks!

depends on the gas station.... call and ask if they have VAG-COM diagnostic tools. some standard OBD-II universal diagnostic tools wont pick up on the right codes.

any independent european car mechanic would have the right capabilities tho.
