Auto Problems A4 Avant Euro Model 2001 Diesel

Evening

I have a problem with the car - reverses fine but when in drive or any forward gear the revs die away and there is no real drive - engine revs rise then fall away - as if strangled - but it never actually stalls.........is this a limp home feature if the auto box is on the way out / short of oil? or is it the MAF or something like that?

Any ideas gratefully received

Don't know much about the auto box, but when the car goes into limp mode it still drives like normal but it feels like the turbo has been removed. Hope this is some help.
