K & N Air Filter

I have a 2000 1.8T with less than 35k on the odometer and i just put in a drop-in K & N air filter.

I friend of mine told me that it might not be a good idea. He has heard of the oil that is on the filter building up on the map sensor which eventually leads to a $700 replacement job.

Has anybody heard of this actually happening? Could this actually be a problem?

i have heard this problem before. however, it seems in every case that it occurs after the filter is washed and then over-oiled.

i've had my K&N for 5 years so far, washed and re-oiled once a year and not a single problem.

so you just dont wanna over-oil it after you clean it. simple.

Someone recently told me that oiled foam filters were the best compromise between air flow and particle filtration. Something about the oiled gauze filters (e.g. K&N) allowing a fair amount of dirt through, in an effort to improve air flow. Most purists still insist that the OEM fiber-type filters are best. I just wish there was an unbiased, honest source for these kind of answers.

I used a K&N direct-fit panel filter in my Taurus SHO for several years without any MAF problems (177,000 miles and counting). Although, it always seemed to me that I got better results with a cheap Fram filter in the winter. Maybe the cold temperature makes the oil too thick to breathe through?
