hi all,

considering a 96-99 A4 v6. after looking at RL's and ES300's
so now im checking all the audi forums to get some idea of reliabilty and such.
this will (if im convinced) be my first "german" car.

being that im in the midwest and saw my first ice storm, im leaning in favor of quattro. but i dont want payments and such so around 10000$ is what im shooting for.
my concerns about an older audi is as follows:
1)how many miles is too many on an A4? acuras can go safely past 200k.
2)what should i watch out for when i zero in on a test-drive candidate? noise? leaks? etc.
3)and of course engine mods. what companies should i look for?

thanks in advance to all that help. ill keep doing my research but all info you supply will be appreciated.

audi's arnt quite as reliable as asian cars.. but they can hold their own. with proper service an audi will reach 170k atleast with no problem.

obviously, if the car is leaking fluids on the pavement you're not goingto wanna buy it unless you want a hassle. driving the car is the best way to see if its a good car... how the suspension feels, how it shifts and clutches. A4 clutches are good up to ~100,000 miles with normal driving. Ask if the car has its origi**** clutch.. if its the 2nd one (or... 3rd) the car was probably driven hard.

bottom line.. have a tech check the car out before anything is final. if you can find something certified or atleast sold by an audi dealer that would be ideal

don't buy a 2.8 (V6) A4 if you want to mod the engine. the 2.8 is a good engine (i've got it inmy jetta... ) but there are lacking mod options mainly because of the tunability of the 1.8T. Search this forum for more info on tuning the 1.8T.

all that being said... look for something with ~60-80,000 miles and around $10000. It would be well worth it to you to pay up to $2500 more for a car you're really interested in.. itll be better in the end.

i definately agree with that i have an A4 with the 2.8 tho it isnt that great for tuning the car is great and you cant beet the quality with audi...go with what really sticks out to you. I beave nothing beets a german automobile, my dad bought a bmw i had a jetta and now ive purchased the audi. Jap cars are great on gas, and milage...but nothing beets a german street machine
