I've had a 1998 A4 Avant for 5+ years and have generally been pleased. I'm coming up on my 90,000 mile check up.

My dealership is recommending that I spend an extra $800 to replace the water pump when they replace the belt - they said that changing the belt increases the possiblity that the pump will fail.

Any thoughts / guidance?

I don't know if it increases the chance it will fail, but when they have the car apart, it is a good idea so you won't have to pay for the labor again. Check out ESC Tuning to see what it should cost for parts. The labor, shouldn't be much more.

I have a 2000 A4 with (1.8) with 88k miles on it. At around 82 k my water pump started to give way and I had no choice to but to change the water pump my dealer Schaumburg Audi recomended that I change the timing belt as that would cost me additional $200 at this time and bring the toatl to around $1000 instead of another $800 extra to change the timing belt in another 8 thousand miles.

Might as well get it done
