Gear lights on Dashboard

I just bought a 99 A4 1.8T. I don't see any Gear Indication Lights on the Dashboard. It says in manual that there are lights on dashboard indication which gear (P,R,N,D,3,2,1) is in use. There are lights on the shift gear but no indication on dashboard.

Is it normal?

i had the same problem...look in the manual and find the fuse location, on the driver's side by the door. Then check the fuses, thats what i had to do.
