The 2018 Audi Q5 has dropped much of its camouflage, giving us the best look yet at the next-generation crossover.

Instead of using the typical eye-tricking camouflage, the latest 2018 Audi Q5 prototype is sporting an all-black appearance, revealing its body lines and new headlights. There is still some minor plastic camo covering up the front end, tail lights and roof pillars, but it gives us a good idea of what to expect when the model makes its first public appearance likely next year.

The next-generation Q5 will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s new, lightweight MLB architecture that was first introduced on the new Audi A4. The platform will help shed around 225 pounds from the crossover and you can expect numerous new technologies from the Q7 SUV to find their way into the Q5 including the new MMI infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a new touchpad in the center console.

Expect powertrain options to be shared with the new A4, meaning four- and six-cylinder engine variants to choose from. Diesel engines are probably a lock, although it will be interesting to see how Volkswagen navigates that in light of its recent scandal.
