No reverse!

Hi All

I've lost reverse in my 2000 2.7t Tip. On the flat and level it will crawl backwards and slowly build speed (as if it was a manual with a badly slipping clutch), but forward gears and Tiptronic is fine. There are no faults showing on VAG-COM.

Any ideas?

Sounds like you've lost your reverse clutch. Same thing happened to me. Save yourself some headaches and replace it with a dyno tested rebuilt unit.

I had same reverse problem with my 2.7 tiptronic after only 30,000 mls, after many trips to my dealer and an independent RAC report they took the sump off the trans, changed the oil and checked all the clutches. They said they could find nothing wrong at all! - it is now better but still not right and I can't be bothered to fight them any more.

do you mean rebuilt clutch or entire rebuilt trans?

Nothing was rebuilt, dealership just examined it

Just had mine done. Its the ZF transmission they use. Its in all euro cars except the merc. Find a good transmision place that does euro gearboxes and get the overhaul done. Saves a lot not using the audi dealer who would send it to this place in any case. It will be amuch better unit. Cost $7000 in NZ to do so be glad you have USD's to pay for it Audi should have fixed this via a recall and done the transmission lag at the same time.

I have the same problem. Bought a 90,000 mile car because I liked the allroad and it seemed cheap enough. But.... if I have to do the torque converter and/or the transmission, then I will feel I got "stiffed". Please let me know what you ended up doing. Trying to remain optimistic, some people told me it could be a simple but "hard to find" electrical problem/fix. Please reply.

I am having the same problem ---I don't know whether I should sell it or try and fix the problem. There's a used tranny with 66k miles on it and it can be installed for 3,000 parts + labor. I am not sure if this would fix the reverse problem...

Dont waste your time and money. This post was old and from this first "reverse" problem, one thing just led to another. 4 times of pulling the engine and transmission out which involves removing the front-end of the car and $8,000 later, I thought; "what else could go wrong?", the supension system failed! I was driving it to my mechanic (AGAIN!) and the car veered off the road straight into a tree. The only thing good about this car was the insurance pay-out at the end. It is the worst engineering designed car ever, ridiculous to service (a water pump is 12 hours book time!) and basically the biggest piece of %$#@ I have ever owned. Great to look at, great to drive when it works but, otherwise the biggest piece of $#@%.... get rid of it now! I cant stress enough.

I am sure for that money you could find a good tip specialist and have existing box reconditioned and have some change left.
If rest of car is in good condition and you like it then fix it. Unless you buy other car than Audi, maintenance will always be expensive...
