Rubber Axel Boot Cracked Open.....

I have an 2002 Alroad with 48,000mi. on it.
Was changing my oil today and Noticed that the rubber axel boot on the inside of the Front Passenger side wheel was cracked open and greece was spattered all over the inside of the wheel and Brake caliper.
Just curious if anyone has experienced this ?
Any rough ideas on the cost to repair ?
I'm sure the rubber boot is cheap........but the labor to take everything apart to get to the boot probably ain't cheap.....Just curious.
And How bad is it to drive like this before it gets fixed ?
It looks like there isn't any greece left in the boot.
I looked inside the crack on the boot and it looks pretty empty
If anyone has any helpful info on this please reply.

It sounds like you have a torn CV boot.It's a common repair but a drag none the less. Try to get it fixed ASAP before you fry the axel end. I replaced both of mine plus axles for ~$1,100.00 at an indi shop last summer.

I just had mine replaced. I replaced the whole drivers side assembly (boot & axle) for $350. The boot had been torn for a while and while they had it I had them replace the axle just in case sand/dirt had gotten in there. Not a major repair.

Mine was done under warrantee..definitely a warranteed item under
original 4 yr 50K..even if you are not original owner, dealer might be able to fix under orig mftr warrantee...good luck!!!

I'm under 50k still......but I'm over 4 years, so the warranty is over.
I just called a smaller european / Foreign repair shop.....
They said $129 to put a new boot on......not too bad.

Cost is basically removing the shaft, slapping a new boot, cleaning joint and inspecting it and new grease. We charge about 285 bucks parts and labor at the dealership, so you are getting a good deal.
