Default 2001 a8 Cant pull shifter lower than 4th??

Its weird, in tip mode I can get the tranny to shift fine through the full range of gears, even in drive or 4th it works awsome but for some reason I can not pull the shifter lower than 4th. When I try it feels like I am stretching something or I am going to break the shifter cable.......probably a huge bill......and I don't want to do that. I pulled it into 3rd this morning with ease but later in the day, nada!
I just had the fluid and filter changed last week and it has run wicked.

Any thoughts or hints??

Thanks in advance
