No Reverse WHY ????

Hi All

They broke into my 1997 2.8 A8 and stole my entertainment system. in the process they stole the whole front console complete with the switches and controls for the aircon/air vents/ etc. also for them to do this they broke the gear stick.
all this has been replaced now. but ever since the car won't slect reverse.
the tiptronic won't work. i can only go forward in drive. i'm not sure if the gears will change as i don't dare drive it.
could this be an electrical fault or is the gearbox gone ?
can anyone piont me to a good honest not over expensive mechanic ?
or any help is much appreciated.
I'm in the SE london area.

Did you put in an insurance claim for the damage caused ??

Have you tried contacting your insurance company and stateing mechanical damage has been caused by the break in and has knackered the gearbox ??

Just a thought to try and save you some money as the tip tronic boxes arent cheap if they go wrong
