v8 questions

I couldnt find a section pertaining to the pre A8 Audi V8. Does the A8 share the same engine albeit with a different capacity?

Was this engine based on two vag 1.8 20v engines? If it was, are the heads mounted opposit ways round to put the exhausts on the outside, or were mirror image heads cast for the second bank?

Does it share a bellhousing pattern (and hence box fitment) with the older audi 5 pots?

At what point in their lifespan did these engines change to an alloy block (I believe they did?)

Any major known weakpoints on the V8?

Whats the going rate for a second hand unit complete with loom and ecu?

I have a 1990 3.6L V8 Quattro and a 4.2 A8 and there is not much mechanical similarity as I can see.

The 3.6 V8 was available from 1989 to 1993 (I think) and then the 4.2 unit was introduced in 1993 for the last 2 years of production.

There is plenty of history littered around then net but not many cars - only 3000 or so were produced. Some were manual (mainly in the US) and a few of the very last ones were 6 speed.

Finding one with a 5 speed box is impossible. I have been trying for a while.
