A8 knocking from dashboard

Hi there folks, I'm new 2 the site so not quite used to folks etc yet, Had a few audis in the past, audi 80, 80 sport and now i've got an A8, old one though unfortunately. Just wondered if anyone can help me out really, i've got a knocking sound coming from the dashboard, one of the guys at Audi said its something to do with the AC unit, but i've been quoted almost a grand for them to fix it, any pointers? I don't know any mechanics or locals garages who know how to sort the problem, Any help will be appreciated.

I just love how the audi dealership throws out a sum for repair even though they don't "really" know what it its.
When does it knock? Is it only when AC is on, or all the time.. How loud? Exactly where from behind the dash is the sound coming from?

Answers to some of these can help you further diagnose the problem.

It starts knocking as soon as u switch the car on and its constantly there and quite loud, i have to turn the music up really loud to cover the sound up!!

The guy at the dealership told me it'll be one of the ac units in the dash is damaged but theres 8 different units, the sound seems to be coming from the middle of the dashboard, just above the stereo and i dont know anyone who knows how to take the dash apart and i cant get hold of an exact manual cos its an old car

Had my S8 2001 in for a service today,asked them to look into similar problem.Advised that it is the heater matrix pump,needs replacing,as the part costs over £500 going to leave until heater packs up,real bummer.If you hear where we can get cheaper please let me know.

Just the reason I hate taking cars for a service,nothing straight forward, and this after having rear diff seal go. Only done 20k. Good luck.
