A8 4.2 Transmission Problems

Hi, this is my first post to the site, having read some stuff on transmissions from other sources I guess there are some problems with A8 transmissions.
I have a pristine A8 4.2 Quatro sport 1997 owned from new coverd 67000 mls, It has recently developed a significant clunk when engaging either drive or reverse gear, the transmission works fine otherwise, smooth crisp changes, just this horrible clunk, has anyone experienced similar problems ? and got any suggestions / solutions ??
