Default Loud thud then knocking noise

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone had ever experienced this problem before....

I was driving along the motorway at around 60mph when there was a really loud thud and the car slowed a little almost as if it had hit something (that's what I thought had happened initially).

Im really worried now, its 2 weeks until Christmas and the last thing I need right now is my car breaking down or me having to spend any sort of cash on it right now.

When driving, if I put my hand on the gear stick I can feel a sort of grinding (only way I can describe it) and theres a knocking noise which seems to be gradually getting louder. Changing gears etc is fine and I dont think it has lost any power (actually, I was scared to try incase I did any further damage).

When I increase the speed, the knocking noise also quickens.

Has anyone experienced this? Or have any knowledge of what it could be?

It is a 99 Audi A3 1.6

Thanks in advance

Hi,
I had a similar experience to the one you wrote about. In my case it was the gearbox that was going, I initially thought it might have been a spring because as you were, i was driving and then alll of a sudden there was a bang as if the car hit a bollard or something..

I got it checked and first guy said there was nothing wrong then, same thing happened again a couple of days later and it wouldnt go into a gear for ages..

Hope you get it sorted, but no doubt there will be something else that goes soon after.. i have a 99 a3 and have had nothing but problems with it.. but hopefully you are a bit luckier!!

HI, i have the same problem with my S3. added a thread a while ago. i get a knocking noise when i pull away or put my foot down. i have been told that it is probably a flywheel failure. something to do with that because it is a dual mass one. i have bought new clutch and flywheel, getting it fitted soon as poss. audiwanted £460 just for the flywheel, but i got both from GFS for £330. hope all goes well, let me know if you find it out to be something else. Cheers
