Default bad bad knocking.....

my S3 had recently started making a really bad knocking sound when i take up drive, or put my foot down. it idles ok, and crusies fine, but when under load it sound ****e. at first i thought it was th exhaust blowing, but had it lookked at and it ok. its not the gearbox because when i hold my foot on the clutch and rev the engine i get the same noise. sounds like a timing problem maybe.........obv going to audi will cost a small fortune.......

Does anybody hav any experience with this? many thanks
