a3 1.8t buying guide????

hi there, jus about to purchase a 1998 a3 1.8t with 64000 miles on the clock. since im new with audis i was wondering what the main points are i should look out for before purchasin the car, such as on the test drive. this help would be awesome! also i would really like to put the tail lights of the facelift a3 model (01-) on the car and would like to know if these will fit as i have heard contrasting stories! cheers guys an gals

Nothing really expensive goes bad on this model year A3s.
Later year (2000) have more problems like fuel pumps dying and instrument cluster giving up plus A/C compressor dying.

Timimg belt, u'll need it sometime later
Brake pads+rotors.
Complete P/S system(all hoses, pump and main rack)
Valve cover gasket
Inner CV joints+boot (they just go bad, the outer 1s less often)

cheers for the help mate, hopefully i get some hassle free driving! prob need to change timing belt soon given miles. also do u know roughly
realistic mpg i should get given mix of motorway an town driving. greatly appreciated pal

Myriad of elec problems with mine e.g. ign amp, rear bulbs blowing etc. The £1,200 gearbox rebuild at 80k miles was the final straw for me.
