A3 1999 - Total Electrical Failure when Putting Car in Reverse Gear

Hi,

I have recently been getting an intermittent problem with the electrics when putting the car in reverse gear. When pushing down on the stick & moving it into the reverse position all lights on the dash come on followed by a total power failure resulting in the engine stopping. Taking it out of reverse will allow it to be started again. It doesn’t happen all the time & only does it in reverse gear.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
