Unhappy a3 slow to warm up

hi folks
I am new to this forum thing but figure there my be someone else out there in a similar situation
I have a A3 TDI 100 built late in 2002, with air con, it is very slow to warm up on winter mornings, the temp gague needle is not off the stop after 8 miles driving and the heater only luke warm, it takes about 12 miles driving to come up to temperature, then the heater is great, the car has never overheated and has been slow to heat up from new.
new thermostat fitted, but old one was ok as i tested it in hot water and it opened/closed fine
is there a second thermostat in these cars ?
anyone any ideas?
chers

hi ian,

not sure if i can help but i have a 2004 a3 2.0tdi and before had a golf 1.9 pd tdi 115 and both are definately slower to warm up in the winter, i reckon mine take a good 6-7 miles for the temp to get up there, i found that it takes a while to move initially but once it gets to sort of 70 it moves a little faster.
To be honest i would not worry about it too much, do you have climate?, you could try turning it to econ mode, but im pretty sure the cooling fans only run for the climate when the outside air is about 6-7c.
Anyhow all the best

Hi Jem
thanks for the reply, it is good to know i am not alone, what made me start to think there was a problem is my friend recently bought an 06 VW Touran which i think is the same engine, it is a 1.9tdi 100bhp, and his is up to temp in 3 miles, the gauge at normal and the heater hot even in winter.

cheers
