Default Audi A3 Electrical Fault

Hi Hope some-one can help. I am a first time audi owner and love the car but it keeps letting me down. The problem is that sometimes when entering the car, the self check and speedo do not light up. When this happens the engine will not start. It turns over but will not run. To get around this I have been disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it. This appears to reset something and the dash lights up as it should. Has anyone got any ideas. I have checked all the connections on the battery and to the engine block. The engine is a 1.6 sport on a v reg

You need to get one of the following.
eBay.co.uk Shop - CARSCANTOOL: VAG VW Audi Seat Skoda:
When the fault occurs, plug it in and read the fault code. This will give you the reason for the car not starting.
To me it sounds like an Immobiliser fault but it could be something else.

Thanks for the advice. I am awaiting delivery of the carscantool. I hope it shows the fault. I thought more people would have had this fault but it may be a one-off.

Fault happened again today. Damp cold conditions. Plugged the carscantool in to fault diagnose but an error message was recorded. Seems that because the ignition will not illuminate, the tool cannot read from the car. Disconnected battery a few times and eventually car the car going. Has anyone had similar problems to this..
