My 2001 A2 petrol can not go on a long motorway trip (100 miles +) without the minimum oil warning light coming on. In everyday A-road driving it is fine but I am yet to go on a motorway journey of any distance without having to stop and top up the oil. Does anyone else have a similar experience?

That kind of oil consumption is not right. The Audi petrol does burn some oil but you should be able to go say 8-10000 miles without topping up to max level.
Is there smoke coming from your exhaust? Could be your valve stem seals are worn and its burning it off through exhaust. If not check the bottom of your car around sump for any signficant leaks.

Thanks for your advice. I have checked for visible leaks and was unable to find anything. To be honest I have not noticed any smoke from the exhaust. A friend also suggested it was the valve seals. Quite concerning that these would wear after just 29,000 miles. I suppose that is expensive to repair?
