Unhappy audi 80 1992 2.0 engine hesitation

funny one this. engine starts fine and then it is hesitant between 1500 and 2000 revs. almost jerky and holding back as if fuel starved. also when decelerating from 2500 or so there is occasional backfire. all else seems ok. leads etc are fine.it seems to be worse now winter here, little evidence of it in summer. i suspect it is a temp related problem.temp sensors maybe?mmm. over to you!

Angry Audi 80 94 Missing a Beat

Hello World!!!
I Have a Audi 80 E 1994, L. 2.0 Petrol and mine has done 70,000 serviced miles and it does the very same thing with the addition of the temp never getting above 50 degrees, and a miss when you floor it to quickly. I have changed leads, plugs, roter arm dissy cap etc etc, I fixed the temp gauge with a new sender both to the gauge and the ecu, I've been told it might be the Mass Airflow Meter???? But these things are becoming VERY had to find. Has any one got ANY ideas on how to cure or why it does it?????????????

i have new theory. i think its temp related and has something to do with temp/coolant sensors. there are two apparently and i will get them replaced and the conections checked. the temp gauge stays low too. the past few days the car has run fine, so i doubt the mass flow sensor is at fault. as it has the abt engine there could also be an issue with the inlet manifold heater element(hedgehog thing!). it makes sense that if the coolant sensors are faulty then the engine ecu cannot govern properly. mmm.i wish they had kept the beautifully simple engine set up that my old 1985 sport had with the DZ engine and old fashioned coldstart jet. that was a gem!

mmm. replaced sensors with original. seemed ok now find revs -and rev counter- fluctuate when accelerator held in constant position ie varying by 50+ or more. still jerky at times and still hesitating . could it be rev counter or sender fault? could it be throttle valve potentiometer? or could it be valve body needs cleaning out ? getting to be a cluedo dilemma! i will solve this.. i will...

Just to update, the mass air flow meter and all components are as they should be, have replaced ALL leads plugs dizzy cap rotor arm water and ecu coolent temps senders, have had AUDI to test all engine parts via there plug in testers which can out clear. I did had a nice chat with the audi guy who stated it may just be the Potentiometer on the injection unit?? It may just need cleaning, i'll give it a go. Also i will cleam the throttle actuator.

another clue. now after a mile or so the engine feels like it is dying then runs ok. when this happens i just accelerate through it. now i am thinking fuel pump/accumulator? the engine codeis ABT model, with bosch monotronic system (the one with a round fuel air filter setup and i think it has just the one fuel injector) but difficult to get correct info as the haynes audi 80 book does not cover it and the audi 100/a6 old model of that time does not have that engine in it either but does cover the different bosch/digifant fuel systems.someone mentioned to me that it could be a faulty oxygen sensor! oh well over to you guys. i do appreciate your comments and i am keen to learn more!
