Default 1993 80 2.0L eninge hesitation

Hi all,

I'm having some engine problems with my 1993 audi 80. I would really appriciate some expert advice from you guy's. Since i'm not a mechanic i will try to describe whats going on as precise as possible. Ow and yes i live in the UK but my english is not yet perfect since i recently immigrated from the netherlands, so sorry for that.

So whats happening?
In all gears the engine hesitates\stalls just above 2000 RPM and just below 3000 RPM. Not when in neutral, only when driving. in 5th you barley notice it exept when you try to maintain a 50 or 60 on the motorway in 5th gear. Also it seems to happen more often if i been doing 80mph for a while, if i stick to the 70 it looks like happening a lot less often. When i start it in the morning and drive to work all seems fine. If however i start it in the afternoon to drive home it is a lot worse, and sometimes i even have trouble to get the car rolling at all. I then need to rev it up to 3000 in neutral (or on clutch) and then decluch it.

What has been done so far?
I replaced the airfilter and fuel filter and checked the airflow. I replaced all the leads, plugs, rotor and dizzycap. (wich where pretty rotten to be honest)
Problem still there. However i stil think it's a problem with the ignition somehow?

What else can be done?
Well this is where you guys come in Should (or can) i replace or check more parts myself? or would it be best to take it to the nearest dealership (Glasgow) and have them have a look at it ? I must admit i seen more posts about this (or simular) problems with the audi 80 from around this year, but i never saw a proper solution or solid advice so far.

Hopefully you guy's will have some advice to spare, or maybe even a fitting solution after reading my problem description. Since this mechanicalnoob is running out if ideas at the moment...

Cheers in advance for any reply or advice !!

Seems as the car gets hot, it starts acting up. I had similar problems with my Audi 90 (B4), and all problems have gone since the crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor have been replaced. It would probably help to have a tune-up, new spark plugs. Are you getting any codes ?

thanks for your reply,

Plugs, leads, dizzycap and rotor already replaced.

I would not know how to get codes out of this car, so far as i can see there is no boardcomputer in it.

It does however have a electronic ingnition, and i would not know how to service that, i know that it should self-time itself, so it's prolly not the timing, unless this can go wrong ofcourse.

One more thing that might help troubleshoot it, if i come off the pedel the engine makes backfire sounds as the needle passes the 2 to 3000 RPM while dropping back to idle.

cheers
