I bought a 1996 Audi Cabriolet a few months back , it cost approx £6000, it has since had a complete respray and a brand new hood through an Audi dealership - not cheap. I'm a girlie, adore my car, and yesterday I was involved in a rear end shunt , not my fault other driver accepting responsibity, confirmed by police and independent witness. The garage has just taken it away to be repaired , but most opinion seems to think there is a fair chance that it will be written off .As I said I love this car and really desperately want it back. Can anyone offer any advice or an iota of hope, that will not cost a fortune as money is tight? - Please help a damsel in distress.

I have just spoken to the insurance assessor, who said it "should be a categoy D write -off as you can no longer get a boot floor for this particular make of car." The cost of the repairs are apparently 3800. After stating that I do not want the car written of, well pleading actually I asked if it is possible to pull out the crease. They have stated that they will try their best but its 50/50. They have offered me 4000 fot the car which I have stated is unacceptable. I asked if they could get a 2nd hand boot floor, but he said if they could it would mean cutting it out even if they could get one and that didnt appear to be an option. I then asked if the worse comes to the worse could I buy it back as salvage and repair it myself, the cost of which for salvage would be 800 . Could anyone out there offer some advice on what to do next. I really would love to get my car back on the road , I even asked if I could pay the difference to get it fixed (fool) and he said that it wouldnt come to that. He seemed a reasonable guy .but maybe Im just a soft touch. Please please help. He is going to call me back in the middle of next week and let me know whats happening. I want to be prepared. And could I get a boot floor somewhere? |

You'll probably struggle to insure your car if you claim it back as salvage as most insurers ask if your car has been involved in a serious accident or previously written off. Any insurance you do get will have a higher premium on that car.
My advice is to cut your losses and run. Be thankful that you yourself weren't seriously injured in the shunt and treat your car as a mechanical device that can be replaced rather than something to fall in love with. I don't wish to appear overly cold but if nothing else I'd be really worried about the safety of my car after such a bad crumple - e.g. what would happen if you were unfortunate enough to be in the same kind of accident again? The metal will be weaker and you may not come out so well. £4,000 does sound low but you can normally negotiate a bit with your insurer to get a better price although you'll never get back the amount you've spent on it. |

Well every thing can be fixed and if you don't care that it will have very little re-sale value and you may find so of the main stream companies will not insure it then there is hope.
Where are you located as I may know a good garage that may be able to do the work at a fair price plus he is insurance approved which mean you could tell you’re insurance company that you want it done there as you have the right to choose a garage. His work is A1 as he did my RS4 body conversion and as he always says if it's metal he can fix it. This is their work on my car. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
