At what part of the hood operation does it stop? Wherever it stops is normaly where the problem is.

Is the parking brake on and do you get the light on the dash to confirm? is the hood warning flashing when you use the button?

OK, you will need to get some diagnosis equipment on this, I love these older Cab hood problems (sad I know) But difficult to diag on here.

mine did similar, may not be same problem but worth a look. when you open the boot if you look at both hinges you will see a thick black wire casing on each one and inside there are all the wires for all the stuff that happens in the boot including a couple of sensors relating to hood operation. as the boot opens and closes these wires are bent through 90 degrees and over the years they break inside the casing but because they are held in so tight they don't always lose connection so you get random working / not working. i would imagine if you carefully slit the casing on each side you will find broken wires - i did - audi wanted about £150 per side for the looms so my auto electrician guy just recabled them himself and it solved the problem - one of the wires is a sensor that tells the roof whether or not the boot is shut so it can open safely etc
