Default audi 80 tdi operating temperature

anybody know what temperature an audi 80 1.9 tdi should run at? its running at about 93 rising to 95-96 under load. this seems a little on the high side to me. its recently had a new water pump and thermostat which has made no difference. serviced last week so the air filter is not clogged. don't want to do any serious damage by running it too hot. any suggestions appreciated.

Default Temperature or Temperature Gauge?

This is really another question rather than an answer, and maybe I should post under a new thread, but...

I have my 80 tdi since new, and for the first 10 years the dash temperature gauge used to sit on exactly 90 after the engine warmed up.

Recently though, the temperature is indicated rather lower, maybe 80 or so, and I feel its got lower over time. This really started to happen after a coolant change, maybe even other work (possibly including servicing the instrument cluster for bulbs), and I didnt really think much of it. I suspect that its either the gauge or the temperature sensor.

The car drives fine as normal, but I was wondering...

If its the sensor, then is this same sensor used by the engine management unit to control the engine, and if so, is it likely to lead to the engine running inefficiently. Wonder if anybody knows this answer?

Anybody know where the sensor is exactly and whether its easy to replace (or test)?

Cheers,

Timk

Default

Hi, I guess they should run at 90 deg. C - right in the middle of the temp. guage.

I doubt it's a major problem - just check that the fans come on when you have been idling for a while.

I've recently bought a 1993 Audi 80 tdi and that too sits at 80 deg. C !

I don't really think there is a problem - I don't really trust electrics that are 15 years old! I replaced a temp. sensor on my old vw golf mk3 because it only read 70 deg. C when warm, then with a new sensor, it read 95 to 110 deg. C ! My mechanic checked it out and said the engine was running fine - probably down to the old electrics (combination of old wiring and guage combined with brand new sensitive and accurate sensor!)
