Need Exhaust (and Advice)

Hello,
My cars exhaust recently became a little bassier than it ought to and I am getting some power loss (stuttering, king of chugging). The exhaust also reeks and I can smell it in the car.
I took it to Midas and they told me it was the resonator and it would cost several hundred dollars to repair.
Will a plugged resonator make the car sound/smell/ perform bad like this???
If I am looking at the car from underneath--what exactly is the resonator??

Just curious if anyone can offer me any advice

boy i hope somebody answers this, because thats sort of like what my car is doing....

the resinator should look like a lil box like thing its after the CAT but befor the mufflers

yea you can but ur exhaust will get louder
