Is My Turbo Working ('93 80 1.9 Tdi)

Hello all...

OK, I have an 80 avant '93 with the 1Z engine. All good, had the motor for about 4 months now, done a bit of work on it (brake ovrehaul, filter and oil change etc..) Love the car, does 50 MPG if I'm not beasting it, and happy to sit at 90 on the motorway.

OK, now I have never had a turbo diesel before, or even a diesel, and had to borrow a ford focus estate 1.7 tdi (only 4 years old) and am suddenly doubting my old girl!

I could really tell when the turbo wound up in the focus, a surge of power that I do NOT get in the audi..

I have a distant friend who has the saloon tdi same year, so will track him down and take his out of a spin, but can anyone tell me how I check wether the turbo is doing what it should be.

I have briefly checked hoses and couplings... all looks good.

what should the car feel like ??

You should be able to hear the turbo when you have the window down when you hit the accelerator - like a small wistleing type sound under acceleration.
