Boosted Fuel Consumption

Hello all,

Recently the fuel consumption has boosted up to 15-16 l/100 km in city drive, which I think is too much for this size of engine 1.8 with carburetor. I checked spark plugs, and they seemed to be OK. Exhaust pipe is all black.
Has anyone an idea what could be the cause of this boost on consumption.

How does it power up the hills? If you notice a lack of power you may have a defective Catalytic Converter. That will increase your fuel consumption.

Thanks for the reply.

I have also noticed that, it does loose power not only up the hills, but I also noticed lack of power in general, compared to the power it used to have. Another thing, when temperature reaches 50 ºC, idle gas increases by itself.

I don't know if your car has a MAF(Mass Air Flow)...but if it has...you might wanna check on it. The symptoms are lose of power and increased fuel consumption.

I don't really know if my car has a MAF. It is an AUDI 80 1.8 S (1987), with carburetor and I am not sure if it has an incorporated MAF, for what I doubt since it too old.
