80q Surging

Just got a 1990 80q 5spd. Car runs fine but every so often it surges no matter what gear i'm on. If i back off the gas to a minimum it lessens but as soon as you step on it , it does it again. Then after a while it completely goes away. also it doesn't do everytime i use the car. I'm new to Audi's so any help or idea as to what might be wrong or may be going bad would be welcome .

ps Car has 211,150 miles and runs great when the problem is not present.

I think i might have solved surging problem. The diff locking pin switch is faulty
and i think it may have caused the pin to engage at times causing the surge. So far made small bracket and added a spring to keep pin from moving . No surging since . Its been 3 days .
