Any thoughts on why hyd. fluid would be leaking out the top of the breather hole of the reservoir. Also, a warning light is coming on, even though the reservoir is not low, might be the fluid on the contacts, the stuff is everwhere, not sure. The steering is working, but not 100% smooth. When you take the cap off, there is wisp of smoke and the fluid feels warm.
I noticed you've got the same problem I do, yet no reply for help. Have you figured it out yet since your post?
I have no clue why mine is leaking at the "blow hole" either. See my post, and if you hear something please feel free to contact me. It is so frustrating to have this leak, when I've spent so much time and $$ to repair the steering.
No luck yet. Spent $$$ replacing the hydraulic reservoir under the motor because it had a small leak, but made no difference to the blowhole leak. The faster you drive the more the fluid seems to get agitated, the warming light goes on periodically on the dash. Tried taking the hydraulic lid off and just covering it with plastic and an elastic to drive it out to the mechanic which stopped the leaking and the warning light from going off, but didn't solve the problem. My next thought might be the actual pump might be causing the problem, maybe sucking air in somewhere.
Let me know if you find anything out. Might have to breakdown and take it to an audi mechanic.
I had an Audi 200 turbo ( Audi 5000 in the US) years ago and had this problem. Ended up changing the brake pressure accumulator. This cured the problem. I got mine from a breakers but here is a link for replacement ones;
The solution has turned out to be the hydraulic pump, when they wear out they agitate the fluid creating the the air bubbles which cause the leakage from the blowhole at the top of the reseviour bottle.
