V8 no spark

I searched but need additional and or remedial help. car had been running well until it got cold and then it started randomly not starting (would start with some starting fluid) and chugging/stalling at stops when cold. now it wont start at all. it wasn't getting fuel so I checked the fuel pump first, it runs when the 2 fat prongs on the fuel pump relay are shorted. replaced the relay thinking it was bad but still nothing. checked spark, no spark, checked timing belt and its still nice and tight. so now i'm out of info/ideas I'm 3 hours from the nearest audi dealer and no mechanics in my area will touch it so i'm in need of some serious help. i've read bits and peices about various sensors that it could be as well as the coils but need more precise info on where things are and how to test them.
