VERY interesting. All of the pieces now come together. I had done some testing with a voltmeter on the three connectors near the firewall - as described in the Bentley manual. These tests were within tolerance. The CKP has been replaced and the problem was resolved. Your detailed description of the symptoms are right on. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks Tripod. Your reference to Bentley Page 28.29 "Ignition Timing Reference Sender" got me where I needed to go. The Bentley Wiring drawings for this series of Turbo Gas 5000 84-88 refer to this sensor as "Ignition Timing Sensor" while as you stated it's called "Ignition Timing REFERENCE Sender" on page 28.29.. The original mention was to "Reference Sender". Small details such as calling a thingy by different names can confuse and Bentley did it here.
I think it's of interest to note that the Non Turbo 5000 gas engines do not have this sensor.
