computer codes....as in pulling codes by bridging the contacts of the fuel pump relay and looking for fault codes, or like the auto check system thats some 5000's have. On my 1987 5000cs TQ, underneath the clock there is an orange button labeled check, i believe that this does a computer check, but i'm not really sure what happens.

Codes - as in fault codes generated by the onboard computer and displayed generically as a check engine light. I thought that there was a way to jump a wire somewhere to cause the check engine light to display a fault code. I’m still deliberating a previous post regarding a warm start problem on the ’86 CS Turbo 5000.
I had a Ford Probe Turbo GT that you could dump the check engine light fault codes. As I recall…there was an unattached wire that came out of a harness under the hood. If you grounded that wire and turned on the ignition, the check engine light would flash in a morse code fashion – long and short flashes. You could observe the flashing sequence and look up that sequence in a table in the service manual. For example, one sequence of long and short flashes would indicate an EGR problem, while another sequence would indicate a problem in another component. This was in lieu of attaching a diagnostic computer at the local shop. |

Ya, I've done this with my 5000. Under the hood, locate the fuse box. Open the fuse box up and you should see a relay where you can stick a fuse in on the top. This is the fuel pump relay. When you put the fuse in the relay this bridges the contacts and starts the check engine light sequence. There is a great site with a write up on the steps. It will tell you how the sequence works with all the blinking and what not, so check it out and let me know if you have any questions.

It blinks the code with the check engine light. The blinking converts to numbers and there is a list of numbers on that site I posted before where it tells you what the numbers mean. The numbers will tell you whats wrong, if anything? Did you do the procudure on the site?

I was able to finally locate my service manual. Start engine, drive for 5 minutes, accelerate above 3k RPM at least once, stop – don’t turn off car, put fuse in fuel pump relay, look at check engine light (center bottom light on dash). Light comes on – when fuse is in place - and does not flash. Apparently no fault codes stored. I also disconnected cold start injector during a warm start attempt and did not work. Frustration continues.
