87 Audi 5000 acceleration stalling

I just picked up a 87 Audi Quattro and have an acceleration problem. It loses power when the rpms cause the bar on the computer to read 1.2 or higher. Slow acceleration allows the car to pickup speed without the hesitation, but as soon as I push it, there is this momentary stalling. There is a relation between the bar reading and not the rpms. Under 1.1/1.2 there is no problem just when the readings are higher
