Smoke from exhaust - is this normal?

Under full acceleration, it is normal to see smoke from the exhaust? A few weeks back I accelerated from a slow roll at full throttle to try and rid myself of a tailgater. When I looked in the rearview, I noticed it belched out quite a bit of smoke from the exhaust.

My old carburated cars do this, but I was surprised to see it from an A3. The car does burn oil (about a quart per oil change) but according to the manual this is normal.

My WRX, which of course is also turbocharged does not do this so I'm not sure if this is a precursor to something worse.

What colour smoke ?
What engine petrol or diesel, turbo or NA ?
If its a turbio diesel and you really floor it after a period of sedate driving, you will almost certainly get some black smoke. However if you are seeing a cloud of blue smoke under any circumstances you have a problem of some sort, probably turbo- related if one is fitted.

Unfortunately I couldn't tell the color as it was nighttime and I haven't tried to duplicate it during the daytime.

The engine is the 20.T w/DSG. It is an 06 with about 30k miles.
