I stopped by an aftermarket stereo shop and told them I had a bose system in my new A3. They said they probably can't put any aftermarket stereos without tearing every speakers out and rewiring everything because bose uses a "proprietary" standard resistance that is not really the industry standard. Is this for real?

It is very disappointing because you have no chance to adjust mid-frequency. You even dont have GALA function, which is available on the standard radio. Subwoofer is not sufficient. Sound gets better and better when you increase the volume. The reason is you get more power on the subwoofer and, mid-frequency speakers reaches to their limit.

On the otherhand, the only good thing with the system is having no distortion even on top volume.

Changing the system with aftermarket products?
You can use most of the wiring. It is better to cancel center speaker in case of an upgrade.

Yeah well the Bose ain't meant to be altered, I find it's a quality package and if ya just turn up the base to the back speakers a bit then you shouldn't need any subs or any of that and the sound quality is excellent!!

Does anybody know what it actually comprises of, as i havent been able to find any information about it online, or in any of the Audi brochures.
It comprises 8 speakers (2 in the A-pillars, 2 in the front doors, 2 in the rear doors or side-panels on the 3dr, 1 centre speaker on top of the dash and a subwoofer in the boot) plus a 200-odd watt amp in the boot somewhere.

Definitely worth IMO, had it for 2.5 years on my A3. No it's not as good as a specialist aftermarket install but for a factory fit option (and as a company car I have no other choice) it's not half bad.

BOSE is well worth the money if you're happy to spend that little extra. Unless you intend to get an aftermarket system, get the BOSE. Big improvement on normal system.

Obviously a bose system would not compare to a head unit with aftermarket subs and speakers all amped. Bose is only a couple 6x9s and a few 6 1/2s but it still sounds great for basically a factory system without thump.

my friend has an 02 altima that came with a factory "noss" system (never heard of it before) and it actually sounds amazing.

This is incorrect, I just picked up my A3 S-Line this weekend with the BOSE sound system, it has GALA features and in the tone menu you can alter the bass, mid and trebble settings. It also has a built in microphone in the roof which detects road noise and cancels it to give the listner a clear crisp sound, the bass is deep and the trebble is crisp. I have had it on full volume, no rattles, no distortion and even from outside the bodywork doesnt rattle... All around I think its a cracking bit of kit and defiently worth the extra pennies.
