Can the MAF sensor be left disconnected, and what are the consequences of doing this? Is it adviseable to do it. What I thought was a turbo problem, is in fact a MAF issue. The car performs much better with the MAF unplugged, but are there long term consequences of doing this?

Leaving the MAF disconnected will cause the ECU to use some default values which would certainly not hurt your car and also if the MAF is indeed really faulty ( showing bad values ) it is of course advised to leave the MAF disconnected until you get a replacement. In the worst case scenario you'll get somewhat higher fuel consumption because those default values are pretty conservative.
