Default MAF Sensor problem?

Hey. Ive got an 1998 a3 1.8t which im having a few problems with! Ive had a faulty maf sensor which i have now replaced but the car still doesnt run correctly. Basically, when cold the car wont start with the maf sensor plugged in but because the sensor isnt plugged in, the car only performs to a decreased power. But once the engine has warmed up, if i turn the car off and plug the maf sensor back in, and when i start the car again it will tick over for a moment then start using the sensor and will run to the standard performance. Can anyone please help? Ive also not erased any fault codes when installed the new maf sensor, does this need to be done?

Cheers dan
