Same issue here, i have a 1997 1.6 Sport.

Have heard that it could be the air flow meter (MAF is it??) and also the throttle housing being dirty but would like to know for sure if anyone has the answer.

I have the same problem as well on my 1.6SE I know its not my MAF. Maybe some sort of idle control valve or something?

i had this problem last year, took it to a garage and asked for the throttle body to be striped and cleaned, did the job nicely, erratic idle went away and now its as smooth as the day it rolled off the forecourt.

Hope this helps
