Question No Power to Concert 1 Radio in 2001 Audi A3

Hi i'm new to the forum. I don't currently have an Audi myself although I am looking for one. I do however need your help with one.

Any ideas on this would be great as i'm stumped.

My neighbour has an A3 1.6 petrol which I believe is on a 2001 plate (instrument panel has defaulted back to May 2001), in which the standard Concert 1 Radio has stopped working. I mean completely.

He had some work done on car two or three weeks back and the battery was removed. It was put back on and the headunit stated 'SAFE' which was correct. He has had difficulty entering the code decided to leave it alone until he checked manual.

Anyway he knocked our door today for help as he is now worried because the unit now doesn't come on at all.

My brother and I have had a look and checked the fuses as per the card on the fuse cover but all seem ok.
We pulled out headunit and were slightly shocked at the amount of wiring there but could see anyhting obvious as to why it wasn't working. I noticed the missing 'switched live' cable but I have since read this is correct. (Something about it uses the control module instead of a live feed to the unit to tell it to come on.)

We then removed the Headunit and plugged it in a VW Polo where the headunit powers up fine ans is saying 'Safe'. Plugged it back in the Audi and still nothing.

I got my voltmeter out and tested voltages on the wiring loom and everything seems fine, there is 12v (the permanent live) and on the one marked S connect but the radio will still not power up.

My Brother has run Vag-com on the car and it is not detecting the radio or the conveince module so I am assuming there is a power problem somewhere but I don't know where else to look to find the power issue or the module.

VagCom is reporting repeated faults with the Central locking (although it works), is this related to the radio issue?

What you need to do is go back to the VW and check with the voltmeter what leads are powerd so that when you go back to the Audi you can check if they are also powerd in the Audi. I would also check all the fuses in the fuse box as thing are not always as they seem.

The VW supplies +12v permanent on the same pin as the Audi. It also uses the same earth pin as the Audi.
The exception is when you come to the switched live. The VW supplies power via the pin next to the permanent +12v. The Audi doesn't have this cable or a connector in the plug on the loom. I assume this is right as there is no loose cable floating about in the dash.

See here http://www.siocommunications.co.uk/W...dio_Wiring.jpg

I have been told by my neighbour since I original posted, that the car was in the garage twice not once as he originally told me. the first time the battery was removed and the radio went into SAFE mode as stated above.

The second time the car went in (a non Audi garage), the battery went flat on the car while it was in the garage and to get the car started, the garage jump started it. Now I've read elsewhere on the forum that this can 'fry' the electronics if not done properly. Is this correct?

I have a now run a full scan on Vag-Com myself and is now reporting back that there are seven faults on car mainly to do with the Alarm and central locking system. It still also cannot read Radio or Central Conveinence Module.

It has reported that the Crash signal is active. Car hasn't been in a bump - well not since he's owned it.
A key fault (Key 1 fault) although no light is showing on dash
There is a fault with alarm sensor for tailgate and general alarm sensor triggers.
Not sure if this would be related to the battery dying or whether the garage have fried something.
