2002 1.6 A3 Idling Problem

Hi there First post and first Audi so please excuse my innocence.

Just bought a 1,6 A3 with 55,000 on the clock lovely car and nice upgrade from my 1.4 Golf.

Anyway, The engine light was on when I picked the car up from the dealer (independant not Audi) and he told me that the battery has been dissconnected and if I drive for a while the light should go off. Which it didnt. Anyway, later that day after a 30 min city drive I pulled into the drive way and put the car into neutrel. Before I took the key out I noticed that the rev clock was bouncing between 1500 and 2000 revs. ? confused I hit the accelerator and the needle returned to a smooth 800 - 900, seemed fine. Didnt re-occur for a while then again at the end of another journe it happened again ,I took a video of it with my phone to show the dealer (as it was intermitent) and brought the car back to him. So after leaving the car with him for a day I piced it up and he said that the problem was fixed, showed me some part which he said needed to be replaced (have no idea what this is, looked like the a shotgun shell with a small copper piece comming from the bottom of it, so off I went.

At this point the engine light was off and I was happy enough. After another journey Igot to my friends house only to see my bloody rev counter doing its dance angain,

Then on the way home the engine light cam back on.

Now Im going back to the dealer with my ANGRY face on tomorrow to to get it sorted but just wondering if anyone is familier with this issue, so as the dealer cant **** me or fob me off with some crap i dont understand. (I hate not being car savey).

Hi George,

I'm afraid I'm not too car savvy either but I did have something similar happen to an old car of mine (not VAG) where the car revved up and down on it's own at idle. I'm afraid that was a faulty ECU so I suggest you visit an Audi dealer or specialist to carry out a diagnostic check.

or t could be the air flow mass meter at fault
