hi all, hope someone can help me..........
just tried to start my car (audi a3 1999 1.8t) and it cut out.
tried again and it made a sound as if it was turning over but it didnt sound right.
then the oil pressure lamp came on.
Any ideas, i know the two are probably related, but was wondering if this has happened to anyone else???

i used the car this morning and it was fine, then all of a sudden its given up!!!
its turning over ok but it sounds strange and its not actually starting the engine, the batteries fine, the starter motors new, but alternator i havent renewed yet.
i just find it strange that it started up,then cut out and then the oil pressure lamp (red) came on and it wont fire up. the oil level looks fine too?

Sounds as though the timing belt has broken or slipped. The "funny" sound when you try to start could be due to lack of compression. Testing the compression is first step. I do not know if the valves would interfere with the pistons (and get bent thereby).

Good luck

Glad to hear you are up and running. EFI motors are funny this way. Once flooded, they sometimes "wash down" the oil at the piston rings and you loose compression. Happened to me several years ago on Christmas eve also. Anyway.. Enjoy!

Hi there, My car did a similar thing a while back when it wouldnt start no matter what i did - so i walked away then tried again 15 mins later and with giving it a bit of gas on start up started fine! ,
although it still makes a weird screeching noise on start up and somtimes I have to give it some gas - its a bit annoying really cos I used to have a little peugeot 106 which for the four years I had it never failed to start and never made any silly noises!.

Also got knocking noises from the front suspension ! I think Ive mentioned this before on other posts but does anyone have any ideas why my a3 is a noisy ****!?

Your noisy suspension is probably a result of worn suspension arms.

hi mate, had exactly the same problem when i first got my audi, took it to an audi specialist, not a dealer, and they said it was the bushes.
Had them changed and its quieter than a gnats fart now!!!!!!!
Hope this helps mate........
