Hello, I’m new to this site, but not to audi

I have recently purchased a 2001 1.8T and need to pick your brains.

When I start the engine, there is a rattle for about 2 seconds then it stops. Furthermore, if the bonnet is lifted whilst the engine is idle there is a slight tapping noise.

Is this a common factor relating to this engine?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

The rattling could just be the sound of your valves clacking away until the oil reaches the top of the engine. It will take a couple of seconds for the oil pump to get the oil up there after starting. I wouldn't worry about it but you want to monitor it. You should be using synthetic oil by the way.

Cheers

It could be the hydraulic tappets need adjusting which isnt a huge job.

Well, my '95 A4 1.8 was a problem that could be compared with yours, and believe me IT COULD bring your BIG problems.

In fact, and in my case, it was a badly tensioned timing belt which caused me a € 2.500 repair; Audi supported the total cost (the car had 150.000km and 8 years at that time).
As a note, the rattle was noticeble just at start up (a second or so).

I do recommend a visit to your dealer to check it out.

I was once told that the tapping is the Carbon filter, and not to worry. Still, I thought that the engines were supposed to run silent!
